For nearly ten years, our family was fortunate to work with Doreen Casuto and her excellent staff at RCC. My brother, a professional airline captain, was critically injured in a freak accident with a massive ground vehicle on the tarmac at a Midwest airport in 1998. He sustained life-threatening severe traumatic crush injuries. After months in critical condition in the hospital in Ohio, he was flown by air ambulanced to Sharp Rehab to be nearer his home and friends in San Diego. Doreen became my brother’s nurse case manager and life care planner in San Diego and we could not have asked for a more perfect person to advocate for him.
Doreen is a national expert in rehabilitation care. She understands that each patient is unique and adapts her approach to best advocate for them. She knows the ins and outs of navigating the current extremely complicated medical and insurance systems. Not only did she and her staff oversee my brother’s recovery, they arranged all of my brother’s medical appointments, attended each one to ensure he had the best possible care, and scheduled all of his rehab needs in the hospital and when he came home, insuring he had the tools he would need to become independent again. In addition, Doreen made certain that our family had the support we needed to help us cope with the life-changing consequences of a son and brother’s traumatic injuries.
My amazing brother did regain his independence, although he still had specific unique medical and rehab needs once he was on his own. In 2005, he was awarded the Sharp Hospitals Eagle Spirit Award in recognition of his courage and perseverance to become independent after his accident. Doreen Casuto nominated him for the award. Sadly, the following year he was diagnosed with a rare, deadly cancer. Doreen and staff continued to advocate for my brother during this difficult time. They managed all of his cancer care, assisted with arrangements for hospice care when the time came and provided immeasurable support and compassion. I cannot thank RCC enough and Doreen especially, for the expert, professional, compassionate care they provided to my brother and our entire family during the almost ten years they coordinated my brother’s care. This would have been a daunting task for our family. We are forever grateful to RCC and would highly recommend their exceptional services.
